New York, New York. We went for a short trip but oh did we eat delicious. Every time I travel the first thing I plan, even before buying the tickets, is the restaurants I want to go to. I plan my trips depending on the food, I mean, why not?
Lucky me, my brother in law lives in New York and he is a restaurant connoisseur. There is nothing better than a local knowing where to go, but he is not only a local he is also a healthy foodie like me and they actually know him at places. VIP treatment? Yes, please!
I absolutely love the health movement in the Upper East, especially in New York. I believe this is something that should be developed in Miami. Everywhere you turn there are healthy places to eat, also hot dog stands, but regardless there are options. Some are very fancy and expensive but many of them are very affordable to have on a day-to-day basis.
SWEET GREEN
So we arrived at New York City and our first stop (after our Uber driver got a ticket for reckless driving) was Sweet Green. It was SO SO good and refreshing. It’s a destination for simple, seasonal, healthy foods. They make your salad in an open kitchen, which represents their commitment to transparency in the ingredients they use. I mean they even shred the carrots in front of you. Talk about honest integrity and transparency at its max.
If you are looking for a quick, creative make your own bowl place, this is it! They have tons of greens, veggies, nuts, seeds, grains, animal and vegan protein, and dressings to choose from. I only wish it existed in Miami!
PRESSED JUICERY
The next stop was Pressed Juicery for a healthy dessert. It was 30 degrees outside but I still needed my vegan ice cream.
Their mission statement is simple: make high nutrition a realistic option for all people… and they NAILED IT! The juices are around $6.50, which is the cheapest I’ve seen and their plant-based ice creams are pretty cheap too, not to mention incredibly delicious and nutritious. I had the strawberry flavor topped with shredded coconut, strawberries, and almond butter.
COSME
For dinner we went to Cosme. This is a contemporary Mexican inspired restaurant, very stylish and filled with the “cool crowd” of New York I have to say. It’s ran by world-renowned chef Enrique Olvera. If you have seen “Chef’s Table” in Netflix then you know who he is. He is the s***. He focuses on Mexican cuisine using local and seasonal ingredients from the Hudson Valley and surrounding region. The fact that the ingredients are local just makes every dish so much more flavorful. I can’t get over the duck and the cobia al pastor with this amazing pineapple puree and cilantro. My mouth seriously waters just thinking about it.
BY CHLOE
Saturday for lunch couldn’t have gone any better, but I seriously over did it. I got to By Chloe and I ordered for myself an amount that could feed a whole family. I got too excited! At By Chloe you find delicious, wholesome, and plant based dishes that do not compromise taste, or satisfaction. If anything each dish is even more delicious than its regular non-vegan cousin. All the dishes are vegan, made with local ingredients and 100% made by them daily, nothing is bought or processed. Their mission statement is to “redefine what it means to eat well”, which very much resonates with what I believe in. At By Chloe you can eat well, balanced, healthy and not boring, which is what healthy foods means to some people. My favorite dish? Definitely the avocado cashew pesto pasta and the espresso cookie. I have a trip to Boston coming soon and I can’t wait to try out the By Chloe location in Bean Town.
SHUKO
Dinner was the most amazing culinary experience I have ever enjoyed. Shuko is the most exciting new Japanese restaurant named by Eater NY, and the New York Times. It involves a carefully designed tasting menu, each bite knocking down any preconceived idea you have about sushi. If you get to go, I advise you take a seat at the bar. Instead of checking your iPhone between each bite you’ll be desperate to see what’s cookin’ because each bite is just more amazing than the last.
MAREA
Sunday lunch was at the 2 Michelin star restaurant Marea. With over 750 wines to select from for each fresh coastal seafood plate, Marea was named the best Italian restaurant by Bon Appetit, Esquire and GQ magazine. Also, named the best Italian restaurant in NYC by Zagat. The most amazing part is that they have a lunch special which includes a first and second course for $52. The atmosphere definitely represents their superb cuisine. If you get to go, try the Polipo, the Fusilli, and the Tagliolini. This is not the first time I go to Marea, and I can tell you, it never fails!
So Long New York! Looking forward to exploring more restaurants in this fantastic and incomparable culinary niche.
