It seems a very obvious and logical concept for many, but for others we return from the holidays, a week goes by, two weeks pass … and you have not yet returned to your healthy routine which you respected so much before going on an adventure. It may be lack of motivation, lack of organization, laziness, fear of compromise or a simple downturn because you are back to the real life .
Whatever the cause, this guide aims to help you return to your healthy lifestyle without having to be extreme.
- Don’t wait until Monday
I don’t mean that you have to return to your routine the day after returning home. You can take a day to unpack and organize but do not wait half a week to return to your routine because when Monday arrives you will find an excuse for not exercising and not eating healthy, and when Tuesday comes you will want to wait until next Monday. It’s like taking off a band-aid, with one rip organize yourself and you’ll see that this will take away your downturn.
- Plan and visualize a long-term routine that you can commit to.
For some that routine is to do pilates twice a week, for others it is cardio and you weight lifting 6 days a week. Commit yourself to doing something that you will be able to achieve. If you have never done weights do not intend do weights 6 times a week because if you do not achieve this you can get discouraged. Also plan your meals, visualize them, write them down, look for healthy recipes that are to your liking and you can even get ideas for healthy meals from your trip. This brings me to my next recommendation.
- Go grocery shopping and cook at home
Since you already planned your meals and looked for recipes, get down to work and go to the market and fill that refrigerator. When you arrive from a trip it is essential to eat at home and know what ingredients are in the foods you are eating. If you have accumulated a lot of liquid on your trip, eating at home is key to returning to normal. Be careful with this recommendation because as simple as it sounds it is very common to return tired and order delivery day after day, this would not be the best for your body or your wallet after a holiday!
- Consume lots of water and green vegetables
It is very likely that on your vacation you drank a lot of wine and not much water, and consumed a lot of refined flour and not many green vegetables. Water and vegetables oxygenate the body, support the body to detox, help digestion and also help you lose those extra pounds that were the result of the holidays.
- Get enough sleep
It is very common to forget the importance of sleeping in health. When we sleep we produce a hormone called Leptin that is responsible for telling the brain “I ate enough and I am satisfied” and this in key to health. Also, when we sleep each of our cells are repaired so that our body functions optimally and you have the energy needed to exercise, cook at home and fulfill your planned routine.
- Focus on the future.
If you are discouraged because the holidays are over think about how good it is to be back home. How nice it is to sleep in your own bed, how nice it is to be back to your closet, how good it is to eat healthy again, and how amazing it is to start planning the next getaway!
